SOW & Consulting Advice

Some guidelines to help you establish a written consulting agreement outlining the relationship and expectations between you and your client. . .

Defining the Objective

For a consulting project, it is extremely important to construct a written agreement which outlines the expectations and relationship between the engaging parties. It is important to identify yourself as an independent business and to describe the various terms of the engagement related to how each party will work with and protect one another in the completion of the services to be provided to the client.

It is as equally important for the consultant, as an independent business providing consulting or technical services to clients, that both parties to have a clear understanding of the end-result expectations for the engagement.

The best way to accomplish this is through a Statement of Work, or what is commonly referred to as an SOW.

A SOW is a formal document that describes the services being delivered under an agreement, including the scope of work, bill rate, milestones and deliverables, timelines and budget for the project, and works in conjunction with the standard terms and conditions of a formal Agreement.

Clearly defining the work within the SOW will help to ensure the company is focused on results versus the “how to” aspect of the project, which will also help to ensure that a proper IC relationship exists.

TalentWave helps our independent professionals and our Clients to put these important documents into place, helping to protect you and the relationships you have with your clients.
